The New York Rangers added experienced depth at the forward position after acquiring veteran Eric Staal on Sunday.

This move is much more than uniting him with his brother, Marc Staal. Currently sitting in second place in the Metropolitan Division, the Rangers added another veteran presence on the ice and in the room. It’s also another complementary piece since forward Rick Nash -- sidelined since Jan. 22 with a lower-body injury -- is not expected to go on long-term injured reserve.

New York sends prospect Aleksi Saarela to the Carolina Hurricanes, along with a a 2016 second-round pick and a 2017 second-round pick.

Eric Staal, 31, comes to New York with 322 goals and 453 assists in 909 career games. He may not be the offensive threat he once was, but Staal could help spark the Rangers, who in turn could help him regain his point-producing touch.

Staal, who won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006, also adds playoff experience for the Rangers. He has played in 43 postseason games with 19 goals and 24 assists. Having his point-per-game strength in the playoffs adds to a team that fell just short against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference finals last spring.

As for the Hurricanes, they get a solid prospect in Saarela, who impressed many scouts with his play for Team Finland during the World Junior Championship.
