QB Cam Rising sits again as Utah uses late score to beat Baylor

Utah quarterback Cam Rising missed his second straight game Saturday against Baylor as he continues to recover from an ACL tear.

Without Rising, Bryson Barnes and Nate Johnson combined to throw for 153 yards as the Utes scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, the second with 17 seconds to go, to escape Waco with a 20-13 win.

Rising ramped up his practice this week, but sources had told ESPN he was doubtful to play despite traveling with the team.

He is expected to return later this month, sources said. Utah plays Weber State next week before opening Pac-12 play against UCLA on Sept. 23, a logical target date as Rising continues to practice more.

Rising established himself as one of the top names in the sport last season, throwing for 3,034 yards with 26 touchdown passes before he was injured in the Rose Bowl. He has led Utah to back-to-back 10-win seasons and Pac-12 titles.

Without Rising on Aug. 31 against Florida, Utah still managed to score 24 points. The highlights included a 70-yard deep shot from Barnes to Money Parks for the game's first score and Johnson rushing for a 27-yard touchdown.

Baylor also was without its top quarterback, as starter Blake Shapen injured his MCL in the season-opening loss to Texas State. He is expected to miss two to three weeks. Sawyer Robertson, a transfer from Mississippi State making his first career start, went 12-for-28 for 218 yards with two interceptions.
