AUSTIN, Texas -- It was only a matter of time before ESPNU 150 Watch List member Kent Perkins (Richardson, Texas/Lake Highlands) received his offer from Texas. He just had to get to Austin.
A family emergency didn't allow that to happen during Texas' first junior day on Feb. 12, but the 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive tackle was able to make it to the second junior day on Saturday and was offered upon arrival.
Perkins didn't waste much time pondering the offer and committed to Texas on Monday, he told HornsNation.
"It's just a great place, and you can't go wrong with Texas," Perkins said.
He became the 10th member of Texas' 2013 class, joining offensive tackle Jake Raulerson (Celina, Texas/Celina), wide receiver Jake Oliver (Dallas/Jesuit), defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), quarterback Tyrone Swoopes (Whitewright, Texas/Whitewright), running back Kyle Hicks (Arlington, Texas/Martin), receiver Ricky Seals-Jones (Sealy, Texas/Sealy), linebacker Deoundrei Davis (Cypress Woods, Texas/Cypress Woods), receiver Jacorey Warrick (Houston, Cypress Falls) and defensive end Daeshon Hall (Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster).
Perkins is the first of what could be as many as five offensive linemen commitments in this class, though four is more likely. Darius James (Harker Heights, Texas/Harker Heights) was the first offensive lineman to get offered during the first junior day.
Perkins is strictly a right tackle for Lake Highlands but that's only because it already has a solid left tackle in place.
"From the time he really started progressing his sophomore year we had a junior that was pretty good," Lake Highlands coach Scott Smith said. "Kent would be great on the left side, but we just stuck with the continuity and kept things the same. That's why he's on the right."
Most colleges are projecting Perkins as a left tackle, which Smith thinks he could transition to easily.
In addition to Texas, Perkins also had offers from LSU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas A&M. He attended junior days at Texas A&M (Jan. 28) and Oklahoma (Feb. 4) before this weekend.
