12.1 and Zaheer gets a wicket first ball back. Has this pitched in line, though? Length ball, tight around middle and leg, just about holds its line. Just pitched on line, Fulton defends for the angle, but somehow misses it, and is somehow hit on the back leg 23/2
9.5 Ishant Sharma turns this morning around for India. Poor shot - not the first one - from Rutherford. Short of a length, outside off, Rutherford punches away from the body, can't control the bounce, and gets a thick edge. Rahane takes a diving catch at gully, flying to his right. Rotherford must be wondering he should be so lucky. He has seen Fulton survive two, and the first time he edges, there is a flying Indian to take the catch. And which bowler of all? The much-maligned Ishant Sharma. Rutherford shouldn't be blaming his luck, though. He has been going after wide deliveries as if they were going out of fashion 19/1
68.1 that's an unfortunate way to get out. This is a poor delivery, going down leg, at gentle pace, asking to be glanced away for four, but he gets a thin edge through to Dhoni down the leg side 251/4
17.1 Ishant has two. This is No. 151. Taylor is gone. He drives at a length ball, plays just in front of his body, and fails to keep it down. Jadeja takes a safe catch at shortish wide mid-off. Taylor just didn't look settled in there. He was edgy throughout. This wasn't a half-volley by any stretch 30/3
121.4 superb catch by Jadeja. India's fielding has been bleak, but this is outstanding. McCullum goes straight this time, nearly clears long-on where Jadeja leaps high to take the catch inches inside. He realises there is no way he can hold himself in, and almost backhands this back into the field of play. Goes over the rope, and comes back to claim it. One of the best catches of this variety ever 503/10
99.4 and Ishant produces a wicket from nowhere. Bowled from wide of the crease, angling in a long way, hits him in front of the stumps, but wouldn't it have gone down with the angle? Umpire Steve Davis says it wouldn't have, and raises his finger. Missing both on the line and the height. Brendon McCullum, the non-striker, is bemused. Shakes his head in surprise. Tell you what, Steve Davis doesn't quite look impressed with the NZ captain's reaction 384/5
103.1 and Ishant is one short of a five-for. Wide half-volley from Sharma, Watling drives away from the body, no attempt made to get close to the line of the ball. Edges it through to third slip 398/6
108.3 moves too far across. He has been doing this to get runs fine on the leg side, but this time he has gone too far, exposing his middle and leg stumps. Shami hits them, beating Southee's attempt to flick 434/7
117.2 Sharma gets a five-for. His first since July 2011. Sharma bowls on a length, just outside off, makes him poke at the ball. The edge goes low to second slip, and Rohit Sharma takes a good catch 490/8
118.5 Kohli for spin is a good slip fielder. He takes a low sharp one here. Wagner expects this to turn. It doesn't. Takes the edge. Kohli does the rest 495/9

0.2 Welcome to New Zealand, Dhawan. Gone for a duck. Looking midwicket, edging to gully. This is superb bowling, but not sure it is great batting. Short of a length, into the pads, he is opened up, looks to play this to leg, with hard hands, and gets a leading edge thick enough to carry low to gully. Superb catch. This is a leading edge. You always see these late, and he has plucked this inches off the ground 1/1

19.4 Wagner, you beaut. Hits top of off from round the stumps against the angle. That is too good. Wasim Akram would be proud of this. He is flirting with the no-ball when he goes wide on the crease, and then angles this in. Vijay plays for an off stump line, but this one straightens ever so slightly to beat the outside edge and hit the top of off. Vijay is like he has seen a ghost. He has done almost everything right. Timbaaaaaaah. Even the bail is broken. Stunning delivery 51/4
0.6 Pujara is gone. What a poor un-Pujara-like shot. Full and wide, he plays a nothing push at it. The ball does nothing. Goes straight through, takes the edge, and he is gone. He had to stretch to reach it. Nervous innings comes to an end 3/2
5.4 what a sharp bouncer. Kohli has been given. His reaction suggests it might have gone off the helmet. I am sure it went off the helmet, but did it touch the glove or the bat on the way? Forget that. We will check the replay later. For the moment, what a superb bouncer this is. Quick, not too short, but somehow rising towards the badge on the helmet. Indian bowlers, that's how you bowl a bouncer. Kohli is clearly surprised by how much this has risen, and fends at it uncomfortably. Second slip takes the catch. Many replays suggest that it kissed the thumb on the way. Possibly he didn't feel it. There is a slight Hot Spot mark on the thumb 10/3

45.1 another poor shot, another overnight batsman gone. India folding like a piece of paper. Not driving length at all, pitches around off, angling away. Rohit plays the push-drive, with hard hands, gets an inside edge. Onto the stumps 138/6
44.1 poor shot from Rahane. No business playing at this ball. It is away from him, he is playing a defensive push. He won't get anything even if he middles it. Southee, though, gets swing to go with it, gets a healthy edge, and through to Taylor at first slip. You either go after these deliveries properly, or leave them alone. These in-between pushes are recipe for disaster. And disaster it is for Rahane 138/5
53.4 Dhoni presents another opportunity, and this time Watling makes amends with a low catch. I know Dhoni has failed again, but this is a special delivery. Everything about its trajectory in the air suggests it will swing back in. It pitches on off, and Dhoni plays slightly inside its line, expecting it to swing. And then after pitching - don't know why, but sometimes balls do it - it goes the other way, enough to take the edge. And Watling takes the low one 167/7

57.4 Zaheer's short swingathon is over. Bowled from round the wicket and wide of the crease, Wagner has dug this in short and also angled it in, Zaheer stands in the crease and has a heave at it, only to edge it through to the keeper 188/8
58.2 Southee gets him. Length ball, Ishant wants to loft it, doesn't get all of it, and he has found mid-off. India won't be able to reach BMac's score by the looks of it. Sharma was backing away and swinging. That's completely unlike him 189/9
59.6 all over. Wagner too good for the tail. Wide of the crease, angling in, Shami is squared up to this shortish delivery, and edges it through to the slip cordon 202/10

2.6 and now New Zealand are two down. Soft dismissal. Half-volley just outside off, and he is not leaning forward into the drive. Fails to keep it down, and short cover takes the catch 9/2
0.6 that's a superb delivery. It is plumb if he hasn't got an inside edge. A poor Test for Rutherford continues. Pitched up, middle and leg, swings back in, beats the inside edge, hits back pad. That is taking middle and leg flush. Awfully close to the inside edge, but there is no bat involved here 1/1
5.5 and they are three down for 11. Jadeja takes another screamer. Short of a length, hip high, Williamson turns the bat face, but the ball doesn't come on, and he fails to keep it down. Jadeja at short midwicket dives forward and to his right to take yet another blinder. Williamson's first sub-50 score this whole tour. Stop the damn press somebody 11/3
29.4 Rahane takes a screamer. Zaheer gets a wicket off an ordinary delivery. This is Rahane's wicket. Zaheer goes wide on the crease, bowls short and wide, it is there for the cut, and Taylor goes in a full-blooded manner. Except that he fails to keep it down. Now, the cordon has come closer in the first innings, but that ball keeping low doesn't mean it is coming slower. So at full pace - off the outside half of the bat, not the edge - it goes to gully where Rahane gets hands around and delivers the wicket. Lower than waist high, and he has to go down with it too. Exceptional 63/6
7.4 short of a length, on the pads, and McCullum has run himself out. Jadeja is everywhere, man. And Ishant has done superbly to break the wicket. This is pushed past short midwicket, McCullum thinks there is two in it, but he hasn't budgeted for Jadeja who gives it a gazelle-like chase, slides and throws in one motion, and what a powerful arm he has. Credit to Ishant, too, because he has come in from mid-on to take the throw, has collected this on the half-volley, and has broken the wicket 15/4
12.2 beauty from Shami. He has come back really well from a poor first innings. This is quick, skiddy and seams in. Short of a length, just outside off, and then it goes after pitching, through the gap, and hits the top of the stumps 25/5
35.2 Ishant gets a wicket. He has deserved one today. Short of a length, accurate, stays low a touch, takes the toe end onto the stumps. Watling falls after a valiant vigil 78/8
34.4 Jadeja does it with the ball too. Fullish and straight, Southee turns his wrists, fails to keep it down. Short midwicket takes the catch. The Test continues to amaze - it's 379 for 7. India will love a target of under 400 78/7
35.5 Ishant has two in one over. For once, an edge carries. Superb bowling. Length ball, upright seam, pitches off, holds its line, takes the edge, and Rohit takes it nicely at second slip 80/9
41.2 down the wicket to pull now. Incredible. Top-edges the pull to be caught by that man Jadeja again. At deep square leg. India have turned the momentum in this match. What can they make of this, though? 105/10

7.6 lucky lucky breakthrough for New Zealand. This is a length ball well down leg, Vijay has been scoring fours off them easily, but he is caught down leg this time. He doesn't seem happy with the decision because he thinks it has gone off the pad. However, HotSpot shows a faint smidgeon on the bat too 36/1
74.1 Wagner has produced this wicket out of nowhere. What a luxury to have such a player on call. What heart, what spirit shown by Wagner. Goes round the wicket, produces a bouncer that is too difficult for Dhawan to leave. It is going across him, but has started just outside leg, and there is no room. As he weaves away, he fails to get his glove out of the harm's way. It kisses the glove. Wagner, what a beaut 248/4
29.2 that;s a beaut from Southee. Cometh the hour, cometh the leader of the attack. Goes wide on the crease, bowls short of a length, Pujara has to play the angle, the ball swings away late, bounces too, takes the outside edge, and New Zealand have drawn first blood this Sunday 96/2
60.3 is this the break New Zealand needed? Completely against the run of play. So not a wicket-taking delivery. This is short, this is wide, Kohli makes the mistake of pulling instead of cutting. The ball doesn't quite come on, and by the time it does, it is on its way down. Kohli gets a bottom edge. That is dying in between keeper and slip, but Watling takes it by his toes 222/3
81.1 and here is Rohit Sharma gone first ball. New Zealand have sensed the moment and seized it by the scruff of its neck. Lovely outswinger first ball after tea. No looseners from Southee. Just short of driving length, Sharma caught neither back nor forward, and the swing does the rest. This is unravelling fast 270/6
80.1 and what a beauty first ball. What a perfect ball. That has swung, but oh - hold on - Rahane has hit this one. What a time for a rough call. The game could change because if this. A lovely inswinger first of all. Starts around off, comes back in, hits him plumb in front, except that Rahane has hit it. Oh what drama at Eden Park. A Kallis-esque moment from Wanderers 268/5
95.6 Wagner, the Maestro. How does he do it? No No. Hold on. They are checking on the no-ball. Awfully close on the no-ball. I'll give you facts. Will let you decide on the basis of that. He goes wide on the crease, bowls the slower bouncer, does Dhoni in, the bottom edge brings the off bail off. They ask Dhoni to wait. They want to check if his back foot has cut the side crease. One angle says he hasn't. The other says he has. When landing, the side of the foot appears to have touched the crease. But there is no proof it landed there. It could be the bulge on the foot in the air. It could have been in the air. You can make your own minds up. Third umpire says it didn't touch. That's all that matters for now 362/9
86.5 the party is over. Jadeja did what he knew. But he has fallen short. Goes down the wicket, looks to clear mid-on, but he has come too close to the pitch of the ball, and ends up hitting it off the inside half of the bat. Sodhi takes the pressure catch at mid-on. Advantage New Zealand now 324/7
93.5 And Neil "Black Caviar" Wagner strikes again. This guy is willing New Zealand to win this Test. Short of a length, angling in, Zaheer - as with No. 9 batsmen - backs away a touch, presents the outside edge, and Taylor takes a good one at first slip 349/8
96.3 all over. New Zealand win. They celebrate. ishant backs away to swing at a short ball. Has nicked it through. Or is it the sleeve? It is both. Ishant is not happy with the call, but it is out 366/10

Match Notes

India tour of New Zealand 2013-14 News

Pulled it off

5

The victory by 40 runs is the joint fifth closest, in terms of runs, in New Zealand's history

On par with the best

9

The match-winning catch by BJ Watling puts him equal with Brendon McCullum for the New Zealand record for most catches by a wicketkeeper in a Test

Revival

3

No. of fifty partnerships for the eighth wicket in fourth innings in India wins. Dhoni and Zaheer added 59 in Durban 2006

Not quite captain cool

31.75

MS Dhoni's batting average in the fourth innings, with a solitary fifty

Oops!

First ball with the new cherry gets a wicket. Boult gets it to swing in and hit Rahane's pads, but the umpire's not spotted a big inside edge!

Hot on the heels

7

Record for most catches in an innings by a New Zealand keeper. BJ Watling has four now. He'd taken five against West Indies in Hamilton last December

Got 'im

A screamer from Wagner ends Dhawan. Terrific bouncer from around the wicket, made him hop and takes the glove. Just rewards.

Precious solidity

2

There have been only two previous century stands for the third wicket in the fourth innings of an Indian away victory. Will Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan's 126 join them?

Probing spell

1-23

Neil Wagner's nine overs since this morning. He's getting the ball to curl into Shikhar Dhawan quite nicely

Ton up!

Six, four and four! Dhawan blitzes through the nineties and into his second century in Tests

Upping the ante

59-0

Scoreline for the second hour of play this morning. Ten fours and only two maidens in the 15 overs

Partnership machines

261

No. of 3rd-wicket fifty-partnerships for India, including this one between Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan, 85 of those have ended up in winning causes
