6.30pm: An intriguing start to this Test and this series... England won the toss on a greentop and struck early, but New Zealand were well-placed at 199 for 3 and had four partnerships worth between 45 and 70. And yet, England kept on hanging in there, with Shoaib Bashir bowling 20 overs and taking 4 for 69 - as much through injudicious batting as anything else. It feels to me like the game is in the balance heading into the second day, but Andrew Miller's final verdict on the day's play will be up here very soon, with quotes and analysis to follow from Vish Ehantharajah in Christchurch. Thanks for tuning in through the day, and we'll be back for more in the morning.

Razor: "Bit on the nose by the English fielders sprinting through to try and get one more over in. Can someone tell them they should've had seven more?!?!"

Atkinson to Southee, no run, sprayed wide outside off stump, Southee chases after it but can't get a bat on it... and that's all folks!
82.5
1
Atkinson to Phillips, 1 run, half-volley outside off, has a big swipe and gets a thick inside edge. The ball narrowly misses off stump, and Pope does well to half-stop it, diving low to his left. They scamper through for a run
82.4
0
Atkinson to Phillips, no run, full outswinger, a real tempter in the channel. Phillips doesn't offer a shot
82.3
0
Atkinson to Phillips, no run, tight line and length, looks to work through midwicket but a leading edge skews into the covers
82.2
0
Atkinson to Phillips, no run, outswinger on a length, punched firmly to cover
82.1
0
Atkinson to Phillips, no run, length ball, targeting the top of off stump. Defended into the off side

Four minutes left on the first day. It's getting gloomy in Christchurch... and early in London!

Woakes to Southee, no run, shuffles down, Woakes drags his length back and Southee steers into the off side

Woakes returns. 0 for 53 so far.

junaid anwar: "Southee has possible 6 innings to hit 7 sixes to reach 100 sixes in tests."

Shoaib: "How can England possibly be this far behind over rate with Bashir bowling so many overs?" -- Baffling, isn't it? Nine minutes left in the day, and they've only bowled 81...

Atkinson to Southee, 2 runs, just past Stokes' dive! Atkinson goes fuller outside off stump and Southee has a dart with no footwork. It skews up into the off side, with Stokes sprawling after it, but even as he flings himself at full stretch to his left, he can't cling onto the chance
