Scorecard Summary
Scorer: K Vairavan | Commentator: Shashwat Kumar
12:43am Right. That will be that from us for tonight. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. Until next time, this is me (Shashwat) signing off on behalf of Vairavan and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo! Goodbye, goodnight and take care!
Babar Azam, Pakistan captain: (On playing 100 T20Is) I had never expected this. I still remember the journey of starting off here as a ball-boy on the side-lines, and to now be here, it is a huge honour. It was a team effort. Two wickets fell early but then Fakhar and Saim built the innings. The more you appreciate Saim, it is less. He is learning and dominating. Good luck to him for the future and I hope he can continue this. The pitch was assisting the bowlers so it was a good batting performance (to get that score). We had a complete bowling unit and the way Shaheen and Zaman started, Haris bowled and the way our spinners bowled was excellent. Always helps to have more bowling options.
Tom Latham, New Zealand captain: (How difficult was it to adapt) Our preparation was not ideal but we will not use that as an excuse. We did not quite adapt to the conditions early enough. We did well up top and in patches with the ball. On that surface, the score was slightly above-par. We did not build partnerships with the bat and once the rate went up, we had no choice but to go hard. (On Henry) He was fantastic. He was the only one who knew he got a hat-trick. Lot of guys have not been here and it is about taking the learnings from this game and adapt quickly tomorrow.
Haris Rauf, Player of the Match: It was important to put up this performance because I was playing after long for Pakistan. On this pitch, I tried to bowl stump-to-stump. If you start well, like Shaheen and Zaman gave today, you gain a lot of confidence. Your role gets defined a lot more when you have such a good bowling attack. (On which of his wickets was the best) All my wickets were good (chuckles).
12:21am Well, that turned into a fairly one-sided contest in the end. At the half-way stage, it felt that New Zealand had a chance. But once they lost three wickets inside the powerplay, the writing was on the wall. None of their batters got going and with Pakistan's pacers firing on all cylinders, they never really established a foothold in the game.
That said, the longish nature of this T20I series will give the Kiwis plenty of opportunities to turn things around. They will have to think of a riposte soon, though, with the next game slated for Saturday. They could put this down as a bad day at the office, while Pakistan can, conversely, look at this as a thoroughly professional display.
