Wade, seamers put Tasmania in control on rain-hit day

Tasmania 355 (Doolan 115, Wade 72*, George 4-76) lead Queensland 5 for 74 (McSweeney 24*, Bird 2-21) by 281 runs

Some skillful swing and seam bowling from Tasmania in overcast conditions put them in control of their Shield clash against Queensland at the Gabba.

Only 69 overs of play were possible on day two due to rain, but Tigers' seamers Jackson Bird, Gabe Bell, Sam Rainbird and Tom Rogers zipped through the Queensland top order in the gloomy afternoon conditions.

Four of the five wickets to fall were clean bowled, all of them nearly unplayable deliveries that swung and seamed. Queensland debutant Nathan McSweeney was the only specialist batsman to survive; he made an unbeaten 24. Jimmy Peirson faced nine balls for three runs to get through to stumps at five down.

Earlier, Tasmania's wicketkeeper Matthew Wade made an excellent unbeaten half-century to push the Tigers' total beyond 350. He finished 72 not out off 137 balls and got outstanding support from Bird who made 30 off 21 balls. Bird did the bulk of the scoring in the 39-run stand for the ninth wicket with Wade.

Peter George was the pick of the Queensland bowlers, claiming 4 for 76, while Mark Steketee and Luke Feldman grabbed three wickets each.
