Scotland undone by Shenwari and Nabi

Scotland 227 for 8 (Mommsen 77, Gardiner 46, Shenwari 3-18, Nabi 2-30) v Afghanistan
Scorecard

The first day was washed out and a wet outfield delayed the start on the second before Scotland and Afghanistan got to work in their Intercontinental Cup match in Stirling. The visitors would have clocked out feeling much better with their offspinning allrounders Samiullah Shenwari and Mohammad Nabi securing five of the eight wickets to fall as Scotland were kept to 227 in 67 overs.

Preston Mommsen's team were put in to bat by Afghanistan and his 77 off 126 balls was the only substantial contribution. There were five single-digit scores while Hamish Gardiner (46) and Callum MacLeod (38) were unable to convert their starts.

Shenwari was Scotland's biggest problem. His 10 overs cost only 18 runs and yielded three wickets. All of them were vital strikes. He had Mommsen lbw with one that kept a touch low and MacLeod edged to slip in his next over to leave Scotland at 180 for 5. The third strike came in the penultimate over of the day when he trapped Safyaan Sharif in front as well.

Nabi's strikes happened earlier in the day when he denied Gardiner a half-century with a quicker delivery and had Freddie Coleman caught at deep midwicket off a full toss to usher the tea break. Scotland's wicketkeeper batsman Matthew Cross, unbeaten on 27 at stumps, is left with the tail.
