10.02pm Time for some presentations. Jason Roy is Man of the Match. He didn't have enough sugar in him, apparently, during his dizzy spell. But he had enough petrol to put England in command. Form-wise, he is flying: "I'm feeling good, trusting my training, a lot of hard work has gone into it."

Match abandoned. England win by 44 runs on DLS. The umpires have bowed to the inevitable, I'm afraid. So, despite the soggy ending, a fine start to the series from England. Impressive with bat and ball, in particular Jason Roy and the returning Mark Wood. And lots of Pakistan to ponder.

Darn - all those years of research down the drain." Fraid so, Irfan. Unless of course, you are Mohammad Irfan. 9.47pm Adnan: "Just heard on commentary that batsmen started on wrong end after the rain delay at the start of 34th over and Pakistan can claim the game as void and null. Was that a joke on a rule of cricket?" It's true. Pakistan win by forfeit. (And if you believe that, you are welcome to April Fool's gags...)

9.41pm Peter Robinson: "Did you fall for that retractable roof "gag", Andrew?" No, I am pure-bred humbug when it comes to April Fool's. An utter waste of my inbox once every 12 months ...

The umpires are having another chat. I sense a watery grave ... and phooey, off we go... rain stopped play again.

Safi: "Those who say this match is done and dusted must have forgotten Gul's magic against England in 2010." Those who say it's not still believe in the tooth fairy and rainbow-farting unicorns ...

Nick: "People have noticed the date on the retractable roof story right?" Clearly not. But there's one born every day...

9.31pm Bernard Carney: "Headingley had plans for a retracting roof for in 2015." Nice notion, shame about the cost. But it wouldn't work everywhere. Lord's have a hard enough time convincing their billionaire local nimbies that floodlights are a necessity in the modern era!

9.26pm Ben : "Why so long? We're giving the rain a big window to come back! Surely 5 minutes, covers off, keeper and batsmen re-padded!" It's a fair point, but rulez is rulez. Can't hustle them back out there just because this match is already done to a turn. Next time it could be a nailbiter.

9.22pm AP: "Docklands Stadium in Melbourne does have a roof and has hosted international matches. So it has been done!" Indeed, and I'm fairly sure that balls have hit said roof and been called dead-ball.

Play to restart at 9.35pm ... so there we go. No overs lost, allegedly, which seems remarkable in fact, two overs lost and a new target of 252 - or 59 to win from 14 overs. But the D/L par is 147, so England already cantering to victory.

9.13pm Hmm ... there has been a break in the rain and the covers are coming off. They'll need to get a wriggle on, but there's a prospect of a restart. The cut-off time is 10.15pm, so there's an hour to get the ground dry and the overs bowled.

Josh: "The engineering required to build a retractable roof over something the size of a cricket ground would really be something!" Sounds like a job for the thumb-twiddling master-builders of the UAE ... surely they need a new project to replace the Burj Khalifa?

9.07pm A lot of people have seen enough already and are heading for the exits. They've been well entertained, to be fair. Lots for Pakistan to ponder after being out-muscled in all departments today

Mike Silva: "Can't grounds build roofs? Anytime there's a drizzle on centre court at Wimbledon, the roof closes and play resumes..." Slightly worrying that this difference needs pointing out, but the point in tennis is not to blast the ball out of the stadium ... nice idea in theory, assuming the bucolic villagers of South Hampshire don't object to a Thunderdome dominating the skyline....

9.03pm Oh dear, the umpires have tried their best, but the pitch is now suffering from the rain, and so on come the covers and rain stopped play. England are comfortably on top, and that position will only improve if overs are lost. It's a win-win for them, you suspect.

tariq mahmood: "Wahab need some rest now. After the spell to watson your performance is zero. Go home or play good cricket" Steady on. It is barely a week since he blitzed Pakistan to victory in the fourth Test!
