"You cant tell everytime you are rebuilding, someone has to put their hands up. It was a really good start. But no one rebuilt it. batting let us down in this tournament," Dinesh Chandimal says, "It was tough always, when you are playing against South Africa, they are a great side. We couldn't execute our plans in the middle. It depends on performance, still I'm 26, fingers crossed [about playing another World Cup]"

"I'm very baffled. 230 in that first game, yes we were to blame, we didn't bowl well. It's almost like, what do we need to do? Afghanistan were a dangerous team and we beat them. We didn't do well against West Indies either It feels like one of our nightmares where you are struggling to put your pads on, this tournament," Faf du Plessis said, "First game we should have won it, if you play that 230 game ten times in a row, you would've lost one. West Indies again, small mistakes. I picked up a few grey hairs. In four years time I'd possibly look like you [Alan Wilkins, the interviewer]. It's everything for us [winning a world cup] I'll do all I can to play another"

Aaron Phangiso is the Man of the Match. "Its a great pitch, the ball was stopping and turning. Its been a bit tough, we prepared well coming from home and I think we just needed luck on our side. We gave it our all and we tried to make South Africa proud. It was tough to play what you call a dead rubber. But we play for our country and we are very proud to represent it. It's always a good experience to play here, because in South Africa wickets don't help [spin] much. This major tournament, its great to take part in"

Sushruth : "Abbott had better bowling figures than Phangiso. Why didn't he win the MoM award? " ---- Probably because Phangiso's two shifted the momentum back when Sri Lanka were running away with it.

srini: "Some disciplined bowling against England...and SA's position would have been completely different."

10.30 pm There wasn't much on the board, not enough early wickets were taken, Hashim Amla stood till the end and AB finished it off with a flourish. South Africa wanted to give a win to their fans and they have. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka have stuffed their fans with a lot of hard questions. Hopefully some patience is given to them in this period of transition. And it may just get worse if Herath or Dilshan leave soon, and that could well happen.

Desmond Samith: "Sri Lanka need to do a lot of soul-searching. They only managed a win over Afghanistan here and UAE in Asia Cup. Two wins from two tournaments " ---- Well, that is sobering indeed.

Lakmal to de Villiers, SIX, good old golf swing to a good old full toss. That pretty much was the way this troubled Sri Lanka team was going to end this tournament. A juicy full toss for the opposition batsman to tonk miles over midwicket.

Lakmal to Amla, 1 run, full and on the base of off stump, drilled to sweeper cover
17.2

Lakmal to Amla, no run, plants a slower ball just outside off and he has deceived Hashim. Set up for the slash though point, but fails to adjust
17.1

Lakmal to de Villiers, 1 leg bye, finds the yorker just right there, hurtles in at Ab's boots at 140 kph. He was flicking across the line, beaten for the reverse swing. Would have missed leg though
17.1
1w
Lakmal to de Villiers, 1 wide, another stray down leg. Well, I suppose that's one way to prevent AB from scoring runs
17.1
1w
Lakmal to de Villiers, 1 wide, finds the yorker, except he rings the man next door and not AB. Lakmal's getting it to reverse, that time to his detriment

END OF OVER:
17 | 13 Runs | SA: 112/2 (9 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 6.58, RRR: 3.00)

  • Hashim Amla55 (50b)
  • AB de Villiers14 (10b)
  • Dasun Shanaka2-0-17-0
  • Thisara Perera2-0-15-0

Bharath Seervi, says Hashim Amla has completed 1000 runs in 37 innings. AB de Villiers took 54 innings to get to the same!

Shanaka to Amla, no run, searches for another cut shot, but can't reach the slower, wide one
16.5
4
Shanaka to Amla, FOUR, carved between backward point and short third man! What placement! And I thought he was off balance. Rooted to the crease, reaching out, frantically too. Silly me, says Hashim, with that shot
16.4
1
Shanaka to de Villiers, 1 run, pushed to long-on
16.3

Shanaka to de Villiers, SIX, low flying projectile warning! Shanaka bowls a legcutter, but its short and AB goes down low and gives it the elevation it needs. Massive dose of power though.
