4.5 played for the turn and looks up with horror in his eyes once he heard the rattle behind him. Do those new fangled stumps still rattle? Phangiso is not a big spinner of the ball, certainly not when he's been hit for a couple of fours in the first two balls. Speared it in flat, it sneaked through the gap between bat and pad as Chandi went for an expansive cover drive without moving his front foot across. Captain walks off with Dilshan in his ear 45/1
12.5 the conventional sweep, and this time Ravi sends him on his way. Dilshan plants that front leg across and swishes at the ball, misses it and that did seem like it would go on to topple the stumps 85/5
4.6 and all he gets is a golden duck! What can you do? The last ball didn't turn, this pitches wide outside off and hurtles into the stumps! No magic from the pitch, just the left-arm spinner deceiving a batsman in bad form with a beauty. Beautiful bowling from Phangiso. Tossed it up to entice the cover drive and drove through the gap to derail Thirimanne 45/2
9.2 madness! They were taking on the arm of the South African captain! Siriwardana was halfway down and he had nowhere to go. He always wanted a run, after ticking the ball into the midwicket region. He wanted to play with soft hands, but the ball travelled quickly enough. Faf swooped down on the ball - such speed - and an equally rapid throw does him 75/3
10.3 Faf's having a party in the infield and Sri Lanka are only too happy to wander in and be suckerpunched. A length ball outside off sticks in the pitch a bit and robs Jayasuriya of a pretty drive on the up. Shouldn't be playing those shots so early into his innings against the older ball 78/4
13.2 and off he goes! Hands aloft, big smile on his face after a big googly skirts through the bat and pad gap. Kapu was all at sea. He walks off feigning the googly's release, but he did not pick it. His front foot did not reach far enough across because in T20, hitters prefer room. This was the wrong ball to be doing such antics. 85/6
14.6 looks at the heavens and wonders why me? It was a short ball, but with Steyn putting in so much effort to dig it into the pitch, it sticks in it and doesn't come on. Thisara whacks it hard, but he cannot time it well. The ball slows up as it comes to him and he can only bunt it straight to the man at cover 96/7

17.2 that almost seemed like it ran off the face! Herath was on leg stump, and he was willing the ball to take enough of the bat to run away to third man. The ball, pesky thing, doesn't listen. Bet its going to get grounded 109/8
19.2 searching for the escape route via third man, but Abbott asks him to take the diversion all the way to the dressing room. Back of a length delivery comes screaming back in, cramps Vandersay and before he can adjust, it's though him 120/9
19.3 cuts the ball back in, Lakmal was looking for a flick and is dragged through for a risky single and Wiese hits the target. The ball had wandered away behind point, so it was Shanaka, the non-striker's call, and he is the specialist batsman anyway. So reasoning was sound, South Africa were just better 120/10

1.5 Dilshan nails the stumps down at the bowler's end. Qdk is gone! The love story ends? Back of a length and Lakmal attacks off, Amla camps back and runs it to Dilshan at backward point. The 39-year old swoops down on the ball and knocks out the middle stump. Qdk had drifted off in search of a single. Amla wasn't interested. There was no single there. And Dilshan still has it! 15/1
12.6 just rewards! But Faf stands there with a small smile, then walks off looking at the bottom of his bat. He wandered outside off to try and play a scoop shot, but Lakmal has been bowling fast and straight. Full toss, takes a big chunk of the inside edge onto the pad. "Ohhh," I can see Faf mouth as he looks a bit put off. The crowd don't care to indulge in his disappointment. They all wake up and scream "AB, AB, AB, AB, AB" 75/2

Match Notes

  • Phangiso guides South Africa to a consolation win

South Africa's spinner, Aaron Phangiso, playing only his second match of the World T20, picked up two wickets to help his side undo Sri Lanka by eight wickets in Delhi on Monday.

  • Mistakes cost South Africa - du Plessis

It was on the back of "one or two mistakes" against England and West Indies that South Africa's campaign turned sour, said captain Faf du Plessis

  • White-ball Steyn train running out of steam

Recalled after sitting out half of South Africa's World T20 campaign for an empty victory against an even more eviscerated Sri Lanka, a truly great bowler slipped into the night for surely the final time in a major global event
