8.00pm: Another bolt of lightning in the middle-distance, by the sounds of things, which means at least another half-hour before anything will happen... this feels doomed!

7.52pm: The BBC report that the umpires are on their way out to have a look at the outfield. Remember, we have to start in just over an hour's time, otherwise this will be a no-result.

7.45pm: There's plenty of standing water on the covers, and it looks pretty bleak out there... nobody mopping up just yet which suggests there is still some weather around, though it does appear to have stopped raining for the time being.

7.30pm: The lights are now back on, although they are only slowly grinding back towards full-beam.

7.26pm: We've just had some more pictures from Potchefstroom and it is starting to look like this game might be in trouble. Thick dark clouds rolling through, with the floodlights off - unclear if that is purposeful or not - and the rain is coming down.

The latest possible restart time is 8.56pm local time. So it will have to start getting better pretty soon if we are going to get an outright result from this series.

7.03pm: We are now officially losing overs, as of one minute ago per the ECB. The delayed restart is officially because of 'lightning and rain' now, rather than just lightning.

7.00pm: It's now looking very dark, with a handful of groundstaff wandering over the covers. No news as yet as to when we start losing overs, but this delay has lasted at least an hour now and it doesn't look like they'll be restarting anytime soon.

6.45pm: Latest visuals from the ground are of a striking golden-hour sunset... but those covers are still firmly on.

6.30pm: Full covers on the ground now as the dark cloud rolls in. Doesn't look promising..!
