Gauteng edged their way to a thrilling one-wicket, last ball, win against North West after appearing to have the match completely under control. The Gauteng attack had produced an excellent display to restrict North West to 175 - and that total was only reached through a tail-end rally. All the bowlers did their bit, but Johnson Mafa stood out with 4 for 34. At 76 for 1 Gauteng were cruising, only for Vusumuzi Mazibuko to strike four times and bring a different complexion to events. When the ninth wicket fell two runs were still needed and it was left to Saurab Chatterjee, on debut, to scramble the winning single from the final ball.
Border had a more straightforward task completing a five-wicket win over Western Province. Rowan Richards and Lucky Pangabantu grabbed three wickets each as WP limped to 121 all out, falling eight overs short of using their 45. Bevan Bennett then anchored the early part of the reply and even though he fell for 42 Border were never really challenged and eased home with 14 overs to spare.
