Kimi Raikkonen tops second practice for Ferrari

Ferrari topped the second practice session at the Chinese Grand Prix, making use of the super-soft tyres to move ahead of rivals Mercedes on the timesheets.

Kimi Raikkonen led team-mate Sebastian Vettel by 0.109s by the end of the session, although it looked like Raikkonen's advantage was going to be larger after finishing the first two sectors 0.327s quicker on Vettel, before losing 0.218s to his team-mate in the final sector.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg was in third place, 0.237s off Raikkonen, but also faster than the lead Ferrari by 0.148s in the final sector. However, he was 0.285s off in the middle sector and 0.100s off in sector one. If it was possible to add the best of Raikkonen's and Vettel's lap, Ferrari would be 0.446s faster than the best potential Mercedes lap. Hamilton finished fourth, a further two tenths off Rosberg.

The two main caveats to that are that Mercedes set their laps earlier in the session and also hold back a more extreme engine mode for qualifying at most races. Either way, Ferrari looks like it has the potential to make the return to 2015-style qualifying even more exciting than most fans had hoped.

Outside of the Ferrari/Mercedes battle, Daniel Ricciardo was 1.247s off Raikkonen's best effort, with Max Verstappen just over a tenth slower. Force India was also in the top ten, with Nico Hulkenberg seventh and Sergio Perez ninth, meaning Williams' Valtteri Bottas was squeezed down to tenth.

Felipe Massa returned to action after Pirelli found that all three of the morning's tyre failures were not caused by a problem with the tyre itself. Rubbing bodywork was the most likely cause for Williams' issues, while Renault opted not to run Kevin Magnussen in the second session while it investigated the cause of his tyre and suspension failure in FP1.

Fernando Alonso notched up 31 laps in the afternoon after getting the all clear from the FIA to race this weekend. He finished the session 11th fastest ahead of McLaren team-mate Jenson Button.
