What you need to know for Tuesday's MLB Games

By Derek Carty

  • George Kirby (46% rostered) is your top streaming option on Tuesday. It should come as no surprise, given that he is a highly regarded prospect and is facing perhaps the worst offense in MLB in the Detroit Tigers. Kirby himself has been terrific this year with a 3.32 ERA and 3.27 xFIP in 18 starts.

  • If Kirby isn't available, Brady Singer (58%) is rostered at roughly the same level, so take a look for him. Singer has quietly been one of the game's most effective pitchers this year, posting a 9.2 K/9, 2.2 BB/9, and 3.31 xFIP.

  • If you need someone who is almost universally available, though, Dane Dunning (6%) is probably your guy. The matchup against Houston isn't a great one, but THE BAT X still projects Dunning to go roughly 6 innings with a 3.59 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 4.6 strikeouts, and a 31% chance at a win-which is perfectly serviceable in most mixed leagues.

  • The St. Louis Cardinals project as the top offense of the day by a lot, according to THE BAT X. They project for 6.14 runs scored-the only team over 6 runs, the only team over 5.5 runs, and one of only four teams above 5 projected runs. They face Justin Dunn, who is one of the stone worst MLB starting pitchers and one of the absolute easiest to steal against. Tyler O'Neill (64%) is an elite stream. Dylan Carlson (55%), Lars Nootbar (25%), Brendan Donovan (17%), Nolan Gorman (14%), Yadier Molina (9%), and Paul DeJong (2%) are all great options as well, depending on who is in the lineup.

  • If you're looking to shore up your pitching ratios as we head down the stretch, streaming relievers can be a valuable strategy. Some of the best relievers to stream today come from the San Diego Padres. They face a below-average San Francisco Giants offense in an elite pitchers park and with easily the best pitching weather of the day. San Fran projects for just 57 degree temperatures while everywhere else is over 70 (and half the slate is over 80).

Best Sub-50% Rostered Hitters for Tuesday

Best and worst hitters from the day are generated by THE BAT X, a projection system created by Derek Carty using advanced methods like those used in MLB front offices, accounting for a variety of factors including player talent, ballparks, bullpens, weather, umpires, defense, catcher pitch-framing, and lots more.

Prop of the Day

Andrew Heaney Strikeouts: Over/Under 5.5 (-155/+110)

PROJECTION

THE BAT sees Heaney putting up 5.3 strikeouts for this matchup on average, while projecting him to exceed his player prop total 42.8% of the time. THE BAT believes there is positive value on the UNDER with an expected value of $20.07.

Note: Expected Value is a measure of how good a bet is, factoring the probability that it will win versus the odds the book is providing. If you were to wager $1.00 100 times on a bet with an Expected Value of $25, you would win some and you would lose some, but in the end you would expect to come away with $25 in profit on your $100 investment.

FACTORS THAT FAVOR THE OVER

  • Andrew Heaney projects as the 10th-best pitcher in Major League Baseball when it comes to his strikeout skill, according to THE BAT.

  • Citi Field profiles as the No. 8 field in the majors for strikeouts, per THE BAT projection system.

FACTORS THAT FAVOR THE UNDER

  • The New York Mets (20 K%, via THE BAT X) project to have the fourth-least strikeout-heavy lineup today.

  • The weatherman calls for the second-best hitting weather of all games today, as it relates to temperature and humidity.

  • The wind projects to be blowing out to LF at 14.6-mph in this contest, the strongest of the day for hitters.

  • The Mets have seven batters in the projected batting order that will hold the platoon advantage over Heaney in this game, which is especially problematic given his huge platoon split.
