Barcelona's Luis Suarez criticises VAR - despite benefitting from technology

Barcelona forward Luis Suarez bemoaned the adrenaline loss which has come with the introduction of VAR in La Liga this season despite benefitting from the technology on Sunday.

Suarez scored Barcelona's third in an 8-2 win against Huesca but it initially looked like the goal would be ruled out after Jordi Alba was adjudged to be offside by the assistant referee.

However, an intervention from VAR helped establish that Alba was onside before playing the ball and Suarez's strike, his first of the season, stood.

"When there are doubts over [a goal] and VAR's used, you lose your desire to celebrate," Suarez told reporters after the game. "There's no longer that adrenaline."

It was the second time in two games that Barca have had a VAR decision go in their favour after Real Valladolid's stoppage-time equaliser was rightly ruled out last weekend.

"There's a reason it's being used," Suarez added. "It's fairer. We are seeing that in every game. You can't make mistakes because everything is so controlled."

Meanwhile, Sevilla coach Pablo Machin argued that there are still issues with the implementation of VAR after his side lost 1-0 to Real Betis at the weekend in the Seville derby.

Joaquin, now 37, scored an 80th-minute winner but it was the sending off of Roque Mesa just after the hour mark which infuriated the Sevilla coach.

Mesa was shown a second yellow card after clashing with goalkeeper Pau Lopez but Sevilla believe the midfielder was actually the subject of a foul and that they should have had a penalty.

"Roque's furious because he says a possible penalty has ended up with him being sent off," Machin said in his postgame news conference.

"You would hope that with so much VAR and so much technology, [the refereeing team] would have looked over [the incident] properly. But if it's going to be used to make decisions like that, refereeing should be done in the BAR, not with VAR, with a few beers.

"[Mesa] is indignant. He says that the goalkeeper's the one who's caught him and it's an act of aggression. The images back up what he's saying."
