David Lopez scored in the opening minute as Espanyol ran out 4-3 winners in a thrilling La Liga encounter with Las Palmas on Friday night.

Espanyol remain ninth in the table but are now just six points behind sixth-placed Villarreal.

Lopez set the ball rolling in the first minute when he headed past Las Palmas goalkeeper Raul Lizoain, but the visitors levelled things up through Mauricio Lemos in the 31st minute.

The home side were back in front just before the break courtesy of Gerard Moreno's effort, but Lemos' second four minutes into the second half had Las Palmas back on terms.

Pablo Piatti scored from the spot after 53 minutes to put Espanyol ahead once more before Jose Manuel Jurado made it 4-2 in the 74th minute.

Mateo Garcia pulled one back for Las Palmas six minutes before the end but the hosts held on to claim all three points.
