Rafael van der Vaart signs 3-year deal with Real Betis in Spain

Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has signed a three-year deal with Real Betis, the newly promoted Spanish club announced on Monday night.

Van der Vaart spent the past three seasons in a second stint at Hamburg, who last month barely escaped relegation after a playoff for the second straight season.

The move comes on the same day he was voted as the biggest disappointment of the Bundesliga season by his fellow professionals.

The 32-year-old has 109 caps for Netherlands, appearing in two World Cups and three European championships.

Real Betis will return to the top flight next season after winning the title in the Segunda Division.

Real Betis will present their first signing of the summer on Tuesday. It will be a home coming of sorts, as the club said the family of Van der Vaart's mother is from a town 120 kilometres south of Sevilla.

"I am very happy to come here," Van der Vaart told the club's official website. "It's a great club and I really want to start. For me it is a dream because my family lives in Chiclana, very close, and I like playing in Spanish football. "

Van der Vaart previously played in Spain for Real Madrid from 2008-2010.
