Tottenham confident of Christian Eriksen signing new contract - sources

Tottenham are confident of agreeing a new deal with Christian Eriksen before the start of next season, sources have told ESPN FC.

Talks over a new deal for the Danish playmaker have been ongoing for some time with Spurs keen to secure Eriksen's long-term future.

Reports in Spain have suggested Real Madrid and Barcelona are monitoring Eriksen's situation at Tottenham and are ready to pounce for him this summer.

Eriksen still has two years to run on his current deal at Spurs and the club remain optimistic that the midfielder will sign a new deal to extend his stay in North London.

Having secured Mauricio Pochettino on a new deal earlier this month Spurs officials plan to try and tie down a number of their stars to new contracts and they feel keeping Pochettino will boost their chances of players following suit before the start of the 2018-19 season.

Pochettino and Eriksen were pictured together at a restaurant in Denmark recently, sparking rumours of a new contract for the Dane.

Eriksen has established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League since joining Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2013.

The 26-year-old was instrumental in helping Spurs finish in the top four for a third consecutive season this term, scoring 14 goals and registering 13 assists in all competitions.

Eriksen was also key for Denmark in their successful qualification to the World Cup finals and he will be his country's star man at the finals in Russia.
