Former Australia national goalkeeper Ante Covic admits that it was a special feeling to help Perth Glory beat his former club the Western Sydney Wanderers on penalties to advance to the semifinals of the 2015 FFA Cup.
Covic, who was a Western Sydney hero when they won the AFC Champions League in 2014, made a fabulous double save in the second half of regular time to keep Perth in the match in front of their own fans.
After it was 1-1 at the end of extra-time, Glory prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout to book a spot in the last four against Melbourne City.
Covic, 40, was cut by Western Sydney at the end of last season as part of a major clear-out by the Parramatta-based club.
"Obviously there's a little bit extra for me to beat the Wanderers but the first goal was to make sure that Perth Glory went through," Covic said after the match.
"The onus was on them. They were the ones under pressure. And it showed.
"We're a bunch of new players (at Perth Glory) and we're still trying to figure each other out, but it's good to get 120 minutes and progress to the next stage.
In the other FFA Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday night, an Aaron Mooy hat trick saw Melbourne City crush the hopes of minnows Heidelberg United. All of Mooy's goals came in the second half as City won 5-0 in front of 11,372 fans at Olympic Village in Melbourne.
Many had come to see Heidelberg's star import Kostas Katsouranis. The former Greek international, who has 116 caps, showed his quality but was unable to stamp his authority on the game as City enjoyed more than 71 percent possession.
