Joel Matip signs new long-term Liverpool deal

Joel Matip has become the latest player to commit his future to Liverpool by signing a contract extension that ties him to Anfield until 2024.

The 28-year-old, who is available for this weekend's blockbuster clash at Manchester United after recovering from a knock, agreed to fresh terms at Melwood on Friday.

Matip joined the club on a four-year deal as a free transfer from Schalke in the summer of 2016, with the option of an extra 12 months, which the club activated in 2018.

The personal conditions of the initial arrangement have been improved, with a further three years of service tagged on.

Matip has established himself as first choice to partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool's defence following excellent performances at the end of last season and the start of the current campaign.

He joins Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Divock Origi as the senior players to have signed new contracts with the club over the past 18 months.

"In a world of big transfer fees, signing a player like Joel Matip on a free is incredible," manager Jurgen Klopp said in September.

"That was maybe one of the best pieces of business we did in the last years."
