Caddie Confidential: Courage on the course

What would St. Andrews be without wind, cold or rain? How about all three? The weather became a major factor as the first round went on at The Open. Adrian Dennis/AFP/Getty Images

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- After each round at The Open at St. Andrews, I'll talk to a caddie and get some inside info on what the course and conditions were really like, no holds barred. Each caddie will remain anonymous to protect his strategy and get the truth about what's really happening inside the ropes.

Michael Collins: What about the golf course surprised you today?

Caddie: You know, nothing, really. I think it played kind of what we thought, with the wind we were getting and the temperatures. I think it played exactly how we thought it was gonna play.

Collins: Playing in the morning in calm conditions, did you feel like you had to try and go low?

Caddie: You definitely want to get off to a good start, yeah. This morning it was definitely out there. So yeah, it was a day you're gonna look back on and think if you didn't get what you thought you should have, you're definitely gonna regret it.

Collins: Which hole was the most challenging in the morning?

Caddie: No. 17 was always the most challenging, you know? It's just tough into that wind and where that pin was today -- it's just a tough hole always.

Collins: Knowing what the forecast is, do you feel like you got the best side of the draw?

Caddie: I mean, it looks like it for right now, but you don't know until you're done with tomorrow. So really, it's a guess. You think forecast-wise, yes, we did, but until you're done, how could you know?

Collins: What's the one thing you have in the bag this week at The Open?

Caddie: Courage.

Collins: Not a rain suit?

Caddie: Courage.

Collins: Why?

Caddie: Stuff happens that you have to be able to ignore. Whether it's weather, whether it's a bad bounce, whether it's a ball up against one of the lips, you've got to ignore it and move on. You can't get into the "woe is me" attitude out here. You just gotta be brave and courageous and go, "I don't care, I'm just gonna keep going."
