Josh Speidel hurt in car accident

Vermont Catamounts signee Josh Speidel is in "critical but stable condition," a spokesman at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital told ESPN.com on Tuesday morning.

Speidel was involved in a two-car accident at 7:04 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Bartholomew County Sheriff's office. Speidel's Honda had just entered the northbound lane of US-31, while the second car involved had exited off the interstate and was in the roadway between southbound US-31 and northbound US-31.

Speidel's car was struck in the driver's side. The door and roof needed to be cut off in order to free him from the car.

The other four people involved in the accident were not seriously injured.

Speidel is currently at IU Health Methodist Hospital, with head trauma the most serious concern.

Speidel, a 6-foot-7 frontcourt prospect at Columbus North (Indiana), is averaging 25.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game this season. He committed to Vermont in August over multiple mid-major offers and received interest from Big Ten schools. Speidel is one of the top 15 prospects in Indiana, according to ESPN.com.

Vermont assistant coach Kyle Cieplicki, head coach John Becker and the Catamounts players posted a video on YouTube expressing concern for Speidel and wishing him a speedy recovery.
