Jim Young, member of Santa Clara's lone Final Four team, dies

QUINCY, Calif. -- Jim Young, a member of the only Santa Clara University basketball team to reach the Final Four in 1952, has died. He was 82.

The university announced the death of Young, a member of the school's athletic Hall of Fame, on Wednesday night. He died last Friday.

Young averaged 11.8 points per game during the Final Four season and finished with 1,016 points, good for 32nd on the school scoring list. He was a first-team all-West Coast Conference selection in 1954.

A former basketball coach and California history teacher at Feather River College, Young is survived by his wife, Janice A. Young, and daughter Jan M. Young, both of Quincy; stepsons Alex Small, of Minnesota, and Steve Small, of Quincy; four step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; his sister Mollie Hellmann; and brother David Young.
