Portland State has fired coach Tyler Geving after eight seasons, the school announced on Wednesday.
Geving, 43, was 97-117 overall entering the season. The Vikings were 15-16 overall and 7-11 in Big Sky play this past year. Geving signed a contract extension in 2015 that went through the 2018 season.
"I want to thank Coach Geving and his staff for their contributions to the development of our men's basketball program, the department, and university throughout the years," athletic director Valerie Cleary said in a statement. "Coach Geving did outstanding work in recruiting great student-athletes and changing the culture of academic success amongst the team. These decisions are always difficult, and especially in this case due to the outstanding character of Coach Geving."
Geving took over in 2009 after spending four seasons as an assistant under Ken Bone, who left to coach Washington State.
