Spoiler alert: Clubs that contenders want to avoid in September

The Blue Jays haven't had a lot to celebrate this season, but a team aiming at the playoffs still won't want to face them down the stretch. Chris O'Meara/AP Photo

For teams that are well out of the playoff picture, we're now firmly in 2018 territory. It might not sell tickets to admit it, but the 2017 wins and losses for teams such as the San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds have relevance now really only for the draft position.

There is one exception to that general rule, however: pride. One of the dark sides of humanity that I bet we all share is that giddy little thrill of ruining things for our rivals. Whether it's sports or revenge movies or that time I had to have surgery on my leg and requested my sister's favorite food and tried to stipulate she had to watch me eat it, we all have that secret little petty side. If a team can't beat out the Mariners or the Rockies or the Angels for a playoff spot, it might still be able to ruin it for them!

Not all of the playoff éliminées are doormats. Some might be, no doubt, but even bad teams in baseball usually win more than a third of their games, and some of October's non-participants are better than their records to the degree that they can spoil a playoff race down the stretch. With that said, here are my favorite spoilers, and -- with the help of the ZiPS projections -- I'll also estimate whose party they can spoil.
