Free-agent utility player Sean Rodriguez has signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team announced Thursday.
Rodriguez's deal is for a $2.5 million base salary plus $500,000 in incentives.
Rodriguez, 30, is a .228 hitter with a .666 OPS in parts of eight big-league seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, Tampa Bay Rays and the Pirates.
He hit .246 in 139 games with Pittsburgh last season. Rodriguez's biggest attribute is versatility. He has played every position except catcher and pitcher in the big leagues.
The Detroit Tigers were one of three other clubs that expressed interest in Rodriguez before he re-signed with the Pirates.
Rodriguez was ejected from the Pirates' National League wild-card game loss to the Chicago Cubs after a benches-clearing incident in which he appeared to throw a punch in the scuffle.
He then proceeded to give an unsuspecting water cooler in the dugout a series of one-two combinations, eventually sending it tumbling to the ground. He had some fun at his own expense later, tweeting an apology to the water cooler.
