Apparently unable to find a trade for Jose Reyes, the Colorado Rockies have requested waivers on the shortstop for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.
If he goes unclaimed, Reyes will become a free agent in 48 hours.
Reyes did not participate in spring training and was suspended through May 31 after being charged with domestic violence for an altercation with his wife in Hawaii last October. Prosecutors dropped the charge ahead of a scheduled April 4 trial, saying Reyes' wife was not cooperating.
Reyes signed a $106 million, six-year contract with Miami ahead of the 2012 season. He is still owed about $39 million in the remainder of his deal.
A four-time All-Star, Reyes enjoyed his greatest success with the New York Mets, but the team has said it's highly unlikely they would bring him back.
