Tampa Bay Rays catcher Wilson Ramos left his team's 5-0 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night after being hit in the head by a broken bat.
The incident occurred in the top of the fifth inning when Orioles shortstop Ruben Tejada broke his bat on a groundout to short.
The broken barrel of Tejada's bat flew backward, bouncing off Ramos' helmet before glancing off plate umpire Joe West. West was unharmed.
"He won't start tomorrow, but we're confident that he feels good,'' Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "A little bit of a scare there. I think Wilson would have preferred to stay in the game. We just weren't able to stop the bleeding.''
The team said Ramos suffered a laceration on his head and received six staples. He will continue to be evaluated.
"It feels good right now, just little bit headache," Ramos said after the game. "Trainers, they want to wait on how I feel tomorrow. If I feel good tomorrow and do my regular BP and play catch. If I feel good after that, probably play again Wednesday."
Trainers came out on the field to tend to Ramos, who appeared to be bleeding from the top of his head. The veteran catcher walked off the field under his own power and was replaced by Jesus Sucre.
