DePaul's Doug Bruno gets extension

DePaul women's basketball coach Doug Bruno has signed a contract extension through the 2016-17 season, the school announced Friday.

Bruno will be entering his 25th season with the Blue Demons. He has a 458-263 record at DePaul and has led it to 15 NCAA tournament appearances, including eight consecutive.

"We are very pleased to offer yet again, another long-term contract to coach Bruno," DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto said in a statement. "His name is synonymous with successful college basketball around Chicago and around the world as a fantastic teacher of the game, mentor to his student-athletes and fiercely loyal to his alma mater, DePaul University."

Bruno was elated about his extension and reflected on when he was first hired at DePaul.

"I am totally juiced about the opportunity to continue what has become a lifelong passion: coaching DePaul women's basketball," Bruno said in a statement. "When Gene Sullivan asked me to coach the DePaul women as a 26-year-old in the mid-70s I never imagined that that team of young women would inspire me to coach women and that would become a lifetime mission."

DePaul also will name the court at McGrath Arena this season the "Doug Bruno Court."

The Blue Demons could be among the Big East's best this season as they return all five starters from last year's NCAA tournament team and Deidre Naughton, who sat out last season due to injury.
