Devendra Jhajharia became the first Indian to win two gold medals at the Paralympics after he broke his own world record to clinch the top honours in the men's javelin throw F46 category in Rio on Tuesday.
Jhajharia, whose previous best was 62.15 metres (achieved in the 2004 Games), improved the mark with an attempt of 63.97 metres at the Olympic Stadium. 17 year-old Rinku, finished fifth in the same event with a personal best throw of 54.39m. Sundar Singh Gurjar, who was the third Indian in the event and the current world record holder, did not start in the competition.
China's Guo Chunliang won silver with a throw of 59.93 metres, while Sri Lanka's Dinesh Herath won bronze with a throw of 58.23 metres.
The F46 category includes athletes with upper limb(s) deficiency, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement.
Jhajharia won his previous gold at the 2004 Athens Games. His category was not a part of the the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
With this, Jhajharia is now the only Indian to win two golds in an individual event at the Olympics or Paralympics.
His left arm had to be amputated after he accidentally touched a 11,000 volt live cable at the age of eight.
He is coached by Satyapal Singh and is a Padma Shri awardee. A former world record holder in the event, he won silver at the 2015 World Championships with a throw of 59.06 metres.
India now have two gold, one silver and one bronze in the ongoing edition of the Games. Their medal tally in this Olympics matches their best tally of four medals at the 1984 New York Games.
Mariyappan Thangavelu had earlier won gold in the men's high jump, while Varun Bhati had secured a bronze in the same event. Deepa Malik then won a silver in the women's shot put event to add to the tally.
In other events, Suyash Jadhav finished 6th in his heat in the men's 200m individual medley - SM7 category and failed to qualify for the final.
