With a decisive 90-75 victory over Japan, the United States women's basketball team has secured its seventh consecutive gold medal in the Olympic Games.

The hardware is particularly historic for Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi as the duo has become the only basketball players ever with five Olympic gold medals.

Along with winning the WNBA championship and EuroLeague championship, this gold medal is the cherry on top of an impressive year for Breanna Stewart.

Japan did not have an answer for Brittney Griner. Griner's 18 first half points were more than any other player scored in the 2016 gold-medal game for the United States.

She finished the game with 30 points and surpassed Lisa Leslie's previous scoring record of 29 points in a gold-medal game. Griner is the first women's player to score 30 points in a gold-medal game at the Olympics.
