DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Ryan Reed won for the first time in a NASCAR national series with an Xfinity Series victory Saturday at Daytona International Speedway, where Sprint Cup star Kyle Busch was injured in a late crash.
Reed, the 21-year-old driver for Roush Fenway Racing, passed Brad Keselowski for the lead on the last lap to grab the win the Alert Today Florida 300 in the debut race for new sponsor Xfinity.
The race ended minutes after Busch was transported to a hospital after hitting an inside retaining wall with eight laps remaining.
Reed, meanwhile, was celebrating his first career win. He talked about his diagnosis four years ago with Type 1 diabetes, and thanked sponsor Eli Lilly, which runs a "Drive to Stop Diabetes" campaign.
"I thought I would never drive a race car again. Now, I'm standing here in Victory Lane at Daytona with Roush Fenway," Reed said. "Not only for me and my family, but every kid who gets diagnosed with diabetes or anything that says you can't do something. Just go and there and overcome it and do it and win and do the best you can."
Chris Buescher, who pushed his teammate Reed to the win, finished second. Ty Dillon was third, followed by his brother Austin Dillon. Keselowski finished fifth.
