Montpellier succumbed to a second successive top 14 defeat vs. Clermont on Sunday, losing 22-26 in a closely fought battle.

It was Clermont who got off to an absolute flyer with Camille Lopez landing two penalties after just 7 minutes.

However, the visitors had to withstand a nightmare last 10 when Montpellier threw the kitchen sink.

Bismarck Du Plessis scored a try on 72 for the hosts, before Ben Botica's boot kicked a conversion and a penalty.

But it wasn't enough for Montpellier, as Clermont held on for the win.

On Saturday, Toulon responded to their shock opening day defeat with a hard-fought 22-18 victory at Pau.

Seventeen points from the boot of fly-half Leigh Halfpenny proved vital as the visitors secured their first win of the new Top 14 campaign.

Watisoni Votu went over for the home side in the 17th minute, but Toulon hit back through Charles Ollivon midway through the second half.

A late Quentin Lespiaucq try threatened a Pau comeback in the dying stages, but former champions Toulon held firm to get their season up and running.

It was a different story for Stade Francais Paris who fell to a 28-20 defeat at the hands of Brive.

An entertaining first half saw Brive go 16-13 up with Germain scoring all points -- a try, conversion and three penalties.

Stade Francais Paris fought back through a Sergio Parisse try while Jules Plisson landed the extra two points and two penalties.

But after the break it was all Brive with Germain hitting three more penalties as the home team held on for a win at the Stade Amedee Domenech.

Racing 92 kick-started their season with a comfortable 29-16 victory over Lyon.

However, it was Lyon who led first for 14 minutes through Frederic Michalak's boot.

Daniel Carter then stole the show for the hosts, kicking three conversions and a penalty.

Juan Imhoff, Luc Ducalcon, and Henry Chavancy then combined to score four tries to secure Racing a convincing win.

Meanwhile Bayonne and Castres played out an intense 12-12 draw in which was a battle of penalty kicks.

Benjamin Urdapilleta was the star man for Castres, with his boot registering five.

However, that feat was matched by Bayonne's Willie du Plessis, with his last two penalties coming in the last 10 minutes to complete a dramatic comeback.

Finally, La Rochelle came from behind against Grenoble to win 22-19 at the Stade des Alpes.

Hosts Grenoble were leading at the break thanks to Gio Aplon's boot and two penalties landed from Jonathan Wisniewski.

However, it was La Rochelle who stole the match in the closing 40 with new signing Brock James kicking a second half penalty and conversion to secure the win.
