Wales fly-half Anscombe out of World Cup

Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe is out of Rugby World Cup contention after sustaining an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in the side's 33-19 defeat to England on Sunday, the Wales Rugby Union (WRU) have announced.

"Prognosis and management with be determined following further specialist reviews," the WRU said in a statement.

Anscombe, who plays for Wales-based club Ospreys, was helped off in the first half against England on Sunday before being substituted when he was unable to play through the pain.

Anscombe has 27 caps for Wales, scoring 75 points, and started in every game of Wales' Six Nations Grand Slam earlier this year.

The fly-half made his full international debut for Wales as a second-half replacement.in a 35-21 defeat to Ireland before the 2015 Rugby World Cup in August 2015.

Wales play England again in another warm-up match in Cardiff on Saturday, before playing Ireland at home and away in the last of the Quilter Internationals. They begin their World Cup campaign on Sept. 23 against Pool D opponents Georgia in Toyota City.
