Australian Super Rugby teams have chosen to reduce trial matches to just one each ahead of the Super Rugby AU season kick-off in February due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The Brumbies-Waratahs clash scheduled for January 30th in Bowral is the first trial match to be cancelled following the decision with further cancellations to be made in coming days.

"We hoped the COVID-19 situation would have moved in a different direction but unfortunately the franchises have had to make this decision in the best interest of the upcoming Super Rugby season," Brumbies CEO Phil Thomson said.

Government restrictions impacting travel and community events have previously impacted players returning to their clubs for pre-season training.

Several Brumbies players choosing to spend Christmas away from their family to ensure they can attend pre-season training, while several Melbourne Rebels players remain in limbo after being shut out of Victoria.
