UAAP forced to cancel Season 82 after ECQ extended to Apr. 30

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has announced that it will cancel the rest Season 82 due to the coronavirus disease pandemic, the league said in a statement Tuesday evening.

"With the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) having been extended (to April 30), the conditions for the resumption of UAAP Season 82 can no longer be met," as explained by league president Emmanuel Fernandez of Ateneo and Executive Director Rebo Saguisag, who co-signed the statement.

"As such it is now deemed cancelled. All other issues related thereto will be resolved at the proper time as we continue to focus our time, energy, and resources in battling this crisis.

"Nevertheless, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our fans, partners, student-athletes, coaches, and all other members of the UAAP community," the statement closed.

The league had earlier said it would look at "alternative formats" should the quarantine be lifted in mid-April.

Instead, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte, upon recommendation from various fields, opted to extend the measure for two more weeks, which will lapse by April 30.

Among those included in the ban were school and sporting events. Concerns regarding eligibility will be discussed at a later date.

At the time of cancellation, University of Santo Tomas was on track on winning another general championship, and led over hosts Ateneo de Manila University.

Events that were cancelled in the second semester were volleyball and football. Meanwhile, baseball, softball, athletics, lawn tennis, and 3×3 basketball never got started.
