Andy Murray was made to work hard for his 500th career win, but he finally came past Kevin Anderson to reach the quarter-finals at the Miami Open.

The British No.1 broke his South African counterpart in the very first game before seeing out the first set, but Anderson battled back before Murray stepped up another gear to win 6-4 3-6 6-3.

The 500-mark has been achieved by just 45 other men in the Open era, eight of whom are active, and it sees Murray's career record to 500-155.

"There's not a whole lot of people who've made it to 500 so it's quite nice to do that," Murray told Sky Sports. "I've put in a lot of hard yards and done a lot of work here.

"I hope it's not the last win and I hope there are a few more in my career.

"I have a certain number in mind before I finish my career and hopefully my body can hold up."

Murray, who won this tournament in 2009 and 2013 and is seeking his first title this year, next faces unseeded Dominic Thiem after the Austrian beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6(5) 4-6 7-5.

Earlier in the day, Tomas Berdych moved into the last eight after Gael Monfils fell and hurt his hip.

Eighth seed Berdych was leading 6-3 3-2 when Monfils retired. Monfils, seeded 17th, said he was bruised but hopes to be able to play in his next scheduled tournament in Houston.

Unseeded Dominic Thiem also advanced by beating 28th seed Adrian Mannarino 7-6(5) 4-6 7-5.
