Heather Watson is into the second round of the Rogers Cup after breezing past Irina Falconi in Toronto.

The British No.1 needed just an hour to see off the Ecuador-born American, ranked nine places below Watson at 75 in the world, 6-1 6-2 to put to bed any worries of a repeat performance of a week ago, where the 23-year-old fell in the first round of the Citi Open to wildcard Louisa Chirico, ranked 128.

Watson is in the top half of the draw and, should she get past Andrea Petkovic in her next match, could meet world No.1 Serena Williams in the third round - which would be their first meeting since Watson almost stunned Williams at Wimbledon.

Williams is into the second round in Toronto, but had to come from a set down to beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 2-6 6-3 6-0.

"I was really frustrated with how I was playing," Williams said. "And then I got really angry. So I said, 'Serena, you're going to have to be positive and be good to yourself out here.'"

The 21-time grand slam champion blamed unforced errors for her early struggles.

"It was a good opportunity for me because I haven't played a match on hard courts since April-ish, early, early April, after Miami," Williams said. "It was a long time ago. So I think it was really good for me to have that match play."

Williams won first of her three Toronto titles in 2001.

"Like a nice vintage wine," 33-year-old Williams added. "A good vintage red wine, I'd say, getting better with age, I hope."

Slumping Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard dropped out, falling 6-0 5-7 6-2 to Switzerland's Belinda Bencic. Bouchard has now lost 13 of her past 15 matches.

Elsewhere, France's Alize Cornet upset ninth-seeded Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain 6-3 6-7(2) 6-4, qualifier Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia beat 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova 3-6 7-6(5) 6-2, and 11th seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia topped American qualifier Anna Tatishvili 6-3 6-3.

Former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka beat Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 6-1 6-4 and Germany's Angelique Kerber thrashed Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi 6-0 6-1.

German qualifier Carina Witthoeft stunned Coco Vandeweghe 6-3 3-6 6-1, while fellow American Sloane Stephens crashed out 6-3 6-4 to Dominika Cibulkova, just days after winning her breakthrough title in Washington.
