American John Isner says he won't play in Rio Olympics

John Isner, the top-ranked American man, won't be going for gold this summer.

Isner said logistics and scheduling conflicts were the main contributors in his decision to skip the Rio Olympics.

"It's a decision I didn't take lightly," Isner told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

He is scheduled to play the Atlanta Open, an event he has won three times. Assuming he does well again, his run at that tournament would not end until Aug. 6 -- the same day the tennis competition in Rio begins.

Isner, who turns 31 next Tuesday, also told the paper he wants to rest for what will be a grinding swing following the Olympics, including the Western & Southern Open Masters event in Cincinnati and then the US Open.

Currently No. 16 in the world, Isner reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 London Games before falling to Roger Federer.

As it stands, No. 26 Jack Sock would be the USA's top player when Rio commences.
