Nick Kyrgios hints at retirement after Australian Open defeat (2:02)

Nick Kyrgios hints that he won't return to play singles at the Australian Open, yet insists he has "no regrets" after his first-round defeat. (2:02)

The second round is underway at the 2025 Australian Open, and six local hopes are trying to win into the third round.

Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Ajla Tomljanovic are among those hoping to keep their Slams alive. Follow the fortunes of all the Australians here.

Margaret Court Arena, night session (from ~9:00pm)

Paula Badosa (11) vs. Talia Gibson (AUS) (WC)

John Cain Arena, day session (not before 1:00pm)

Jordan Thompson (27) (AUS) def. by Nuno Borges

3-6, 2-6, 4-6

A disappointing afternoon for the seeded Thompson in front of a big crowd at John Cain Arena. Being the seeded player, there was always going to be a bit of added pressure, but it was the Portugeuse man who handled it better.

Thompson only got a look at two break point opportunities all match, but gave up nine looks (and four breaks) to his opponent, while Thompson's first serve percentage languised at 63% to Borges' 77%.

After a positive year (especially on hard courts) in 2024, in which he made the fourth round at the US Open and won in Los Cabos, Thompson's Australian Open campaign will serve as a bit of a reality check.

John Cain Arena, evening session (not before 5:00pm)

Diana Shnaider (12) def. Ajla Tomljanovic (AUS) (WC)

6-3, 7-5

A commendable effort from Ajla, who faced the 12th seed in the second round and was by no means swept off the court.

She hit 25 winners to Shnaider's 26, and 25 unforced errors to 22, it was simply a tale of Shnaider getting (and converting) more looks on break point chances.

Jack Draper (15) vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis (AUS)

Kia Arena, day session (not before 2:00pm)

Aleksander Vukic (AUS) vs. Sebastian Korda (22)

Court 3, day session (from 11:00am)

Roberto Carballes Baena def. James Duckworth (AUS)

6-4, 6-2, 7-5

Not even a near two-hour rain delay could help James Duckworth find answers for Spanish journeyman Roberto Carballes Baena. The Australian suffered a straight set defeat in his second-round clash, once again falling short of reaching the last 32 at his home Grand Slam.

Carballes Baena, meanwhile, reaches the third round at a major for just the third time in his career.
