Brittany McPhee reaches 1,000-point milestone, Stanford wins
McPhee powers Stanford past Arizona State
Brittany McPhee scores 24 points and Stanford defeats No. 25 Arizona State 74-50.
STANFORD, Calif. -- Brittany McPhee became the 39th player in Stanford women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points, finishing with 24 as the Cardinal beat No. 25 Arizona State 74-50 on Friday night.
McPhee came into the game needing 14 points to reach the milestone and accomplished it on a jumper with 8:13 remaining, putting her team ahead by 20 and helping Stanford avenge a loss to the Sun Devils earlier this month.
Marta Sniezek added 13 points and six assists and DiJonai Carrington contributed 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Cardinal (13-8, 7-2 Pac-12), who lost 73-66 to the Sun Devils in Tempe on Jan. 7.
Robbi Ryan scored 11 points to lead cold-shooting Arizona State (14-7, 5-4). Kianna Ibis, the Sun Devils' leading scorer who came in averaging 13.8 points, managed just two points.
McPhee shot 9 for 11 while playing her 10th game since coming back from a nine-game absence with a foot injury.
Stanford, which led 41-26 at halftime as Arizona State missed five of six 3s, kept hold of its spot in second place in the Pac-12. The Cardinal shot 66.7 percent in the final quarter, going 8 for 12.
BIG PICTURE
Arizona State: With coach Charli Turner Thorne visibly frustrated, Arizona State's bench was hit with a technical with 7:41 to play. The Sun Devils shot 37.3 percent and just 1 of 12 from deep overall -- 0 for 5 by Reili Richardson, who missed all eight of her shots in all.
Stanford: The Cardinal beat Arizona State for just the fourth time in the last nine games of this rivalry but are 33-3 against the Sun Devils at home in Maples Pavilion dating to Jan. 5, 1979. ... Stanford improved to 8-2 at home and won for the fourth time in five games since that first loss to Arizona State, bouncing back from last weekend's 11-point defeat at No. 13 UCLA.
