Everett Golson's transition to Florida State won't be easy

After two seasons and an impressive 17-6 record at Notre Dame, Everett Golson will transfer to Florida State for his final year of eligibility.

At first glance this is a match made in heaven. Florida State will gain much-needed experience at quarterback (Sean Maguire is currently the only QB on its roster that has attempted a pass) and Golson will have a chance to showcase his talents in an established, winning program.

Many would expect that the addition of Golson would make Florida State a preseason favorite to make the playoff, but Golson’s transition to Tallahassee may not be as seamless as expected for the various reasons outlined below.

FSU’s depleted offense

Florida State returns an ACC-low four offensive starters after becoming the first school in the common draft era to have at least one player from every offensive position (QB, WR, RB, TE, OT, G and C) selected in a single draft.

In addition to Jameis Winston, Florida State lost four 2014 All-ACC offensive players: wide receiver Rashad Greene, tight end Nick O’Leary, tackle/center Cam Erving and guard Tre’ Jackson.

Largely because of the low returning starter numbers, ESPN’s preseason FPI projections expect FSU’s offense to contribute about seven fewer points to its net scoring margin in 2015, when compared to its 2014 outputs. This accounts for the fact Florida State has had a top-10 recruiting class in each of the past four years. Even if FPI counted Golson as a returning starting QB, the Seminoles are still expected to take a step back offensively.
