NFL teams hoping to test Penn State's Abdul Carter on the field will have to wait a little longer. The edge rusher and top draft prospect won't be participating in the school's pro day Friday, Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"He is still finishing up rehab on the shoulder injury he had from the Boise State game," Rosenhaus told Schefter on Thursday. "He may still do a workout for teams sometime in mid-April."
In addition to the arm/shoulder injury sustained in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, Carter was also revealed to have a stress reaction in his right foot through medical testing at the NFL scouting combine in February.
Carter considered preemptive surgery to insert a screw in his right foot, but doctors advised him against it, Rosenhaus told ESPN. Carter ultimately decided against surgery. By forgoing the surgery and an eight-week recovery process, Carter was expected to participate in the pro day workout.
"I couldn't be more confident that this will be a nonfactor where he's drafted," Rosenhaus told Schefter a month ago. "He will put on a show at his pro day."
Carter, who projects to be a top-three pick and the first defensive player off the board in next month's draft, didn't test or participate in on-field workouts at the combine in part because of the upper-body injury he sustained in December.
"We fully expect Abdul to be recovered in time to work out at his pro day at Penn State, and he will perform at a very high level,'' Rosenhaus told Schefter in February.
Ahead of the combine, Rosenhaus said he forwarded to NFL teams a letter of medical clearance to resume training from Dr. Dan Cooper, the Dallas Cowboys' team physician who has treated Carter and his upper-body injury.
Carter is ranked as Mel Kiper Jr.'s No. 2 overall prospect in his latest Big Board, and he's Matt Miller's top prospect. ESPN analyst Jordan Reid also ranked Carter as his No. 2 overall prospect.
