The Michigan Wolverines clarified their athletic-injury policy Sunday following questions about the health of sophomore quarterback Shane Morris.
Morris left Saturday's 30-14 loss to Minnesota early in the fourth quarter after wobbling and limping to the sideline.
Hoke had said after the game he made the decision to keep Morris on the field Saturday night. He revised that stance Sunday night in a statement released by the university.
The statement said only medical staff members can determine if and when an injured player can return to action. Per policy, Michigan does not provide details about the health status of any of its players.
"[Morris] was evaluated by our experienced athletic trainers and team physicians, and we're confident proper medical decisions were made," Hoke said in the statement. "The University of Michigan has a distinguished group of Certified Athletic Trainers and team physicians who are responsible for determining whether or not a player is physically able to play. Our coaches have no influence or authority to make determinations if or when an injured player returns to competition."
The statement said Morris left the game after aggravating an injury to his leg. It did not acknowledge the blow to the head Hoke was asked about when he said it was his call to keep Morris in the game. The sophomore left the field at the conclusion of the game on the back of a golf cart.
Hoke called Morris "a tough kid" on Saturday night and said he didn't see the quarterback stumble following the hit to the head. He said he would evaluate the depth chart at the quarterback position throughout the next week.
