Concussion sidelines Tennessee QB Brian Maurer against Alabama

College Football, Tennessee Volunteers

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer left Saturday night's 35-13 loss to Alabama late in the first quarter, and coach Jeremy Pruitt said afterward that Maurer suffered a concussion.

It was the second concussion in as many games for Maurer, who suffered a concussion in the first half against Mississippi State on Oct. 12.

Maurer stayed on the ground for a while after taking a hit from Crimson Tide middle linebacker Shane Lee.

A targeting call was overturned upon review on the play.

"We've played six games, and we've been the least penalized team in the SEC,'' Pruitt said. "Probably got more penalties in the first quarter than we've gotten in an entire game this year.''

He added: "I know this, they hit our quarterback and he got a concussion and there wasn't no flag.''

Former starter Jarrett Guarantano came into the game. Maurer then walked slowly toward the locker room in between quarters.

Maurer was 5-of-7 passing for 62 yards with an interception at the time of the injury.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
