The 32-year-old MacDonald is a highly decorated wrestler who won the World Championships in 2012 and also won a bronze in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010. She is also a two-time bronze medalist at the Worlds.

Vinesh's last major tournament was the Rio Olympics, which ended with her sobbing in great pain after sustaining a knee injury while being pinned down by China's Sun Yan. She was eventually stretchered off, underwent surgery and was out of the public eye - barring the spotlight of the film Dangal, about her family - for the next few months.

Sakshi Malik adds CWG bronze to Olympic bronze

Sakshi Malik added a Commonwealth Games bronze to the bronze she won at the Rio Olympics after defeating New Zealand's Tayla Ford in the women's 62kg category at the Commonwealth Games. Malik outscored her opponent by one point, winning the match six points to five.

Malik had won silver in the previous edition in 2014 in Glasgow after losing to Nigeria's Aminat Adeniyi in the final. Malik was India's biggest gold medal hope in the women's section but two losses against against Adeniyi and Canada's Michelle Fazzari ended her hopes of finishing top of the podium.

Ford got Malik down to a danger position and nearly pulled it off with few seconds left. Malik had to cling on for dear life in the last 20 seconds, and showed exceptional strength in preventing Ford from flipping her over. It was her good defence right at the end that helped Malik get her first major international medal since the 2016 Olympics.
