Week 11 was one of the most eventful for African players in the NFL this season, from Kwity Paye and Odafe Oweh's huge defensive shifts to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine's once-in-a-blue-moon touchdown.
African Player of the Week: Kwity Paye (Indianapolis Colts)
Paye, who was born in Guinea into a Liberian family, made two vital sacks on Aaron Rodgers in the Indianapolis Colts' narrow 28-27 win over the New York Jets.
Both sacks came on the final drive of the game, with Paye's hits effectively sealing the Colts win. The first sack also drew a forced fumble, with Paye finishing with seven total tackles.
The Colts had just taken the lead in the game thanks to Anthony Richardson's four-yard touchdown with 46 seconds left to spare.
On first down, Rodgers tried to squeeze through a gap in the Colts defense, but Paye caught him with a huge hit, drawing the fumble and pinning the Jets back 13 yards.
The Jets made up 16 yards on second down, but with the clock running down, third down was their last chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Once again, Rodgers tried to squeeze past Paye and once again, he was stopped in his tracks in the final moment of the game.
The win left the Colts on 5-6, second in the AFC South and still within touching distance of leaders the Houston Texans, who are 7-4 for the season.
African Moment of the Week: Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (Tennessee Titans)
The Titans may have fallen short in their 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, but Westbrook-Ikhine, who is of Nigerian descent, had a day to remember as he caught the longest touchdown pass of the NFL season - a whopping 98 yards.
The Titans trailed 16-3 when Will Levis picked out Westbrook-Ikhine, who timed his run down the right side of the field to perfection, hugging the sideline and maintaining his balance as he beat Josh Metellus to the ball. From there, there was nobody who could stop him as he ran in.
It was the joint-longest touchdown pass in Titans history, equalling the record set on November 25, 1962, when Jacky Lee threw to Willard Dewveall.
Honorable mentions
Like Paye, Odafe Oweh (of Nigerian descent) had a huge performance over the weekend on defense, picking up 2.5 sacks for the Baltimore Ravens in their 18-16 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ogbo Okoronkwo was another player of Nigerian descent who got a sack over the weekend in a defeat, as his Cleveland Browns went down 35-14 to the New Orleans Saints.
Ugo Amadi, born to Nigerian parents, had a solid contribution for the winning side in that game with nine tackles.
Kenny Yeboah, who is of Ghanaian and Liberian heritage, got his first career touchdown for the New York Jets in their loss to the Colts and swapped jerseys with compatriot Paye after the game.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, of Sierra Leonean descent, gained 110 receiving yards and eight rushing yards in the Seattle Seahawks' 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Matt Judon, who is of Burundian descent, got a sack for the Atlanta Falcons in a 38-6 loss to the Denver Broncos. In the Monday night game, Osa Odighizuwa (of Nigerian heritage) was able to get a sack for the embattled Dallas Cowboys, but it was not enough to prevent a 34-10 defeat to the Houston Texans.
African-born Player Watch
Emmanuel Ogbah, who was born in Lagos, was another player who got a sack over the weekend. His, unlike many African peers, came in a victory - a 34-19 Miami Dolphins win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Compatriot Joseph Ossai got a sack for the Cincinnati Bengals against the LA Chargers, but was not as fortunate in terms of the end result as Ogbah. The Bengals went down 34-27.
It was an impressive week for African-born players, but by far, the standout was Paye and his dominant display against Aaron Rodgers in a crucial match for the Colts.
