Nominees for the 2014 Puskas Award - FIFA Goal of the Year

From exquisite scissor kicks to cheeky chips and -- of course -- Zlatan being Zlatan, the 10 nominees for the 2014 FIFA Goal of the Year have it all.

FIFA unveiled its 10 candidates for the award on Wednesday, and it's a truly global affair. There are three from the World Cup, four from the European club season, two from North America and one from Japan.

Whose strike do you think most deserves the coveted Puskas Award?

Tim Cahill

Tim Cahill has an unbelievable record when it comes to scoring important goals for the Socceroos.

In fact, he's the only Australian to have ever scored at three different World Cups.

No other strike, however, will quite match this volley -- struck with Cahill's weaker foot -- to drag the unfancied Aussies level with the Dutch in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup.

Robin van Persie

When the groups were drawn for Brazil 2014, one clash stood out distinctly more than others. Spain and the Netherlands, who battled it out in the previous World Cup final, would meet in the first match for Group B.

In a sensational game, in which the Dutch were shock 5-1 winners, there was no doubting who came up with the pivotal play.

Robin van Persie's sublime header to lob Iker Casillas from 15 yards perhaps set the course for the rest of both nations' World Cup campaigns.

James Rodriguez

Colombian superstar James Rodriguez announced himself on the world stage at Brazil 2014.

His sublime performances not only managed to help Colombia all the way to the quarterfinals, but with six goals the 23-year-old also took the World Cup Golden Boot.

This venomous, dipping volley against Uruguay also won Rodriguez Goal of the Tournament, and solidified his standing as one of football's brightest stars.

Diego Costa

Sometimes it seems that Diego Costa can manage to get the ball into the net through sheer force of will.

This brilliant overhead kick, scored for his former club Atletico Madrid against Getafe, exemplifies that desire.

Unstoppable.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Of course he'd be on this list.

Ibrahimovic won the 2013 Puskas Award for this ridiculous effort against England, and is back to defend his crown with another sublime piece of ingenuity.

Pajtim Kasami

Fulham endured a pretty demoralising 2013-14 Premier League campaign, but one shining light was the form of Swiss prodigy Pajtim Kasami.

This thundering effort against Crystal Palace evoked memories of a young Marco van Basten, with the run, chest, swivel and strike rating 10 out of 10 on the difficulty scorecard.

Stephanie Roche

Don't let the lack of stands fool you. This is a world-class volley from Stephanie Roche for Peamount United against Wexford Youths in the Irish Women's Championship. The ecstasy from Peamount manager Eileen Gleeson on the sidelines says it all.

Remarkably, Roche's goal was struck on the same weekend as both Ibrahimovic's and Kasami's above.

Unbelievable.

Marco Fabian

What do you get when you combine the touch of Dennis Bergkamp and the finish of Eric Cantona?

The answer is this beautiful golazo from Cruz Azul's Marco Fabian.

Spare a thought for goalkeeper Jorge Villalpando. It's not easy to be chipped when you are standing 4 yards off your goal line.

Camilo Sanvezzo

When the Vancouver Whitecaps were trailing 2-1 with 10 minutes to go against a stoic Portland Timbers side in October 2013, it looked like the Canadians would need something special to draw themselves level.

Up steps Camilo Sanvezzo to unleash what can be best described as a flying scissor-kick volley in the bottom corner.

Hisato Sato

The final goal on the list, but it's worth waiting for!

If you're after the definition of making something out of nothing, look no further than Hisato Sato's flick and then loft over the keeper for Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the J-League.

What's most stunning about this shot is the fact that it still seems to be about 2 metres above the crossbar 6 yards from the goal line. The keeper's reaction is priceless.
