Real Madrid's Luca Zidane, son of Zinedine, sent off in U17 Madrid derby

Like father, like son, goes the old adage and Luca Zidane seems to be making a habit of following in former France star Zinedine's footsteps.

A goalkeeper for Real Madrid's under-17 side, Luca demonstrated that he has a potentially fiery temperament too when he was sent off in the Madrid derby game against Atletico.

It was not quite deja vu as video footage caught the teenager using his head to make contact with an opposing player. But although the images were nowhere near as violent, they brought to mind his father's infamous sending off for head-butting Italy's Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final that France lost on penalties.

Luca, though, was apparently red carded for kicking out an Atletico player shortly before cameras caught him going to head-to-head with another rival in the 4-2 defeat.

It is not the first time that the 17-year-old has drawn comparisons with his legendary father, who won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship with France.

A more positive memory from the 2006 World Cup final was Zinedine, then a Real Madrid player, giving France the lead with a Panenka-style penalty early on.

In the semifinals of this summer's European under-17 championships in Bulgaria, Luca tried something similar in a penalty shootout against Belgium.

But while his father's chipped effort down the middle bounced back off the underside of the bar and crossed the line, Luca's strike clipped the top of the woodwork and went over.

Luckily for him, though, he seems to be quite handy between the posts. He saved three penalties, France won the shootout 2-1 and his side went on to beat Germany 4-1 in the final.

Zidane Sr. is currently manager of Real Madrid Castilla, the Spanish club's reserve side. His eldest son Enzo, a 20-year-old midfielder, is captain of that team, while his other two children, Theo and Elyaz, are enrolled in the Real academy.
